FAQ

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?

Booking in advance is highly recommended. Please book early to maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer. Tickets can be purchased through Zerve with a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

Are children allowed?

Yes, there is no age requirement for our kayak tours. However, each child under 11 years of age must be accompanied by an adult in a tandem kayak. Please be sure to select the tandem kayak Extra when booking tickets. We also do not have life vests for children ages 4 and under, so please be sure to provide your own if bringing a young child.

What will we see when I kayak?

Through the Waccamaw River you will see beautiful Cypress and Tupelo trees reflecting in the Black Water. Wildlife sightings vary based on season, weather, and how much noise the group makes. You may see a variety of birds, including Herons, Egrets, Wood Storks, Bald Eagles, Osprey, Ducks, Woodpeckers, Owls, Hawks and a multitude of Neotropical migratory songbirds. You may also see Alligators, Snakes, Beaver, Otter, Deer, or even wild hogs.

Do we use single or tandem kayaks?

We offer single and tandem (2 person) kayaks, so it is your choice. We generally recommend using solo kayaks unless there is a physical or age limitation preventing a guest from paddling their own boat.

What should I bring?

You'll want to bring sunglasses, a towel, snacks, a waterproof container for larger items such as cameras, additional waters or other drinks, and personal flotation devices for guest 4 years and under (as we don't carry flotation devices for children that young).

What should I wear?

We recommend a brimmed hat, and footwear that you do not mind getting wet. You may want to be prepared to swim in warmer months. If there is cooler weather in the morning, then dress in layers since it can warm up rapidly during the day. Gloves and a windbreaker are a good idea for cooler days.

What if I don't know how to paddle a kayak?

No, prior kayaking experience is required. All necessary paddling equipment is provided to you. We carefully select user-friendly kayaks.

What if there's bad weather?

We do not cancel our rentals because of light rain; however, if there is a problem anticipated, we will cancel, delay, or reschedule your rental far enough in advance that you will be able to make other plans. You may hear weather forecasters on the radio and television announcing thunderstorms days in advance. Please do not be alarmed. This is the forecast for nearly every day during the summer; go ahead and book. We have become very adept at checking weather satellite photos and Doppler weather radar on the Internet prior to scheduled rental times.

Are there any weight restrictions?

We can accommodate individuals up to approximately 325 lbs for a single kayak, and a combined weight of 650 lbs for a tandem kayak. Everyone must have at least a moderate fitness level, as you will be paddling. For guests outside of these weight limits, please contact us directly by clicking on "Contact Great Escapes" on the left side of the page.

Are food and drinks included?

While food and drinks are not included in the ticket price, you may bring a snack. We also recommend bringing a bottle of water. There is room for a soft-sided or small 6-pack type cooler in your kayak.

Do I need to sign a liability waiver?

Yes, all participants must sign a liability waiver before renting out a kayak. Any participants under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult sign the waiver for them.

What if I flip out of my kayak?

Flipping out of a kayak is very rare; however, it does occasionally happen. If you are a weak swimmer or have a fear of the water, we recommend you wear your flotation while in the kayak.

Do I need to know how to swim?

No. You will be above the water at all times unless your kayak flips. If you are a weak swimmer, have a fear of the water, or cannot swim we recommend you wear a flotation device while in the kayak.

Where are you located?

Our hut is located on Highway 9 in Longs S.C. We are 10 minutes west of North Myrtle Beach. You will receive specific meeting location instructions once you have purchased tickets. We also have a location in Cherry Gove, so make sure you check your confirmation for specific details.

Can a pregnant woman kayak?

Sure, we don't put any limitations on pregnant women. However, if you have any concerns you may want to consult your doctor before renting a kayak.

Do I have to wear a life vest?

No, life vests are not required to be worn, but you must keep it with you at all times.
